TBIC began the year with a delegation trip to the Czech Republic, Austria, and Southern Germany, covering three important European markets for U.S.-bound foreign direct investment. Across the week, delegates conducted on-site company visits and stakeholder meetings to assess regional industrial ecosystems and current expansion dynamics. Discussions and site tours focused on sectors including paper, precision machining, packaging, aerospace, and related manufacturing supply chains.

The program also included participation in the SelectUSA Central Europe Roadshow stop in Vienna, which was organized by the U.S. Commercial Service Vienna. The event provided additional perspectives on transatlantic investment trends and enabled direct exchange with Austrian companies. In Salzburg, the delegation held a business roundtable with local industry representatives, hosted by the Federation of Austrian Industries Salzburg (Industriellenvereinigung Salzburg), to discuss market developments and pathways for U.S. expansion.

Overall, the trip provided U.S. economic developers with first-hand insights into European manufacturing capabilities, innovation capacity, and potential partnership opportunities.

In February, TBIC welcomed a delegation to visit companies and relevant stakeholders from across Southern Germany and Austria. This year’s itinerary featured companies involved in injection moulding & die cutting, timber and packaging, and medical technology – a presentation of the wide variety of high-end industries that dominate these two markets. The meetings provided fantastic opportunities for companies to both showcase their products, but also provide information regarding their U.S. expansion plans. Products from Austria and Southern Germany are renowned worldwide for their quality and attention to detail – a hallmark that continues to define these two countries. This edition of our quarterly features an analysis of the newly published data for Q3 2023 and revised data for the previous quarters, as recently released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). With $67.8 billion worth of investment, third quarter FDI inflows decreased from inflows in Q2 2023, which were revised to a little higher amount of $78.5 billion. Of this $67.8 billion in Q3 2023 FDI inflows, approximately $26.0 billion were in the manufacturing sector, or roughly, 33.2%.

This issue also includes a time series focusing on Austrian foreign direct investment into the United States.
